The Métis Nation-Saskatchewan
and the Gabriel Dumont Institute of Native Studies and Applied Research
wish to identify Michif speakers and supporters throughout Saskatchewan. The Michif
language must be preserved as a part of our cultural heritage. Connecting
Michif speakers will facilitate this process.
What is Michif? Michif is a heritage language developed by the Métis
during the early days of the birth of the Métis Nation. Our
unique Métis heritage has ties to First Nations and European
ancestry, yet evolved to form a strong identity unto itself. So
too, has our language, Michif, which combines the languages of our
ancestors to form a new language. There are several Michif languages, with the most common blending French, Cree and English.
Other languages include the blending of French and English with other
First Nations languages. A Michif language using Saulteaux is also
common to the Métis.
