About the Regina Library

The Gabriel Dumont Institute (GDI) Library in Regina functions within the mandate of the Gabriel Dumont Institute to support the information and research needs of students and staff in GDI and Dumont Technical Institute (DTI) programs, as well as the research needs of  the wider Métis and non-Métis public. Its unique collection focuses on Métis history and culture and on issues of concern to Métis and First Nations communities.

What you can find in the library

The REFERENCE Collection includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, atlases, and other materials, many of which are useful in conducting genealogical research. Items may be used in the library.

The RESERVE Collection includes materials that instructors have chosen for use by students in a particular course. Loan periods are set by the instructor.

The DEWEY Collection includes fiction (literature) and non-fiction materials on a wide range of subjects. Items may be borrowed for one month.

The JUVENILE Collection includes fiction and non-fiction books suitable for use by children at the elementary and middle levels. Items may be borrowed for one month.

The EASY Collection includes picture books suitable for use by young children. Items may be borrowed for one month.

The CURRICULUM Collection includes textbooks, teacher’s guides, and other teaching materials which are suitable for use in schools. Items may be borrowed for one month.

The SASKATCHEWAN LEARNING CURRICULUM Collection includes Saskatchewan curriculum guides, bibliographies, and other materials published by the Ministry of Education (formerly Saskatchewan Learning). Items may be borrowed for one month; in many cases, links to the online version of the curriculum materials may be accessed from the library’s online catalogue.

The GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS Collection includes documents published by federal, provincial, and First Nations and Métis governments and organizations. Items may be borrowed for one month.

The AUDIO-VISUAL Collection includes kits, videos, DVDs, records, cassettes, CDs, and picture sets. Items may be borrowed for 2 weeks. Equipment for viewing videos, DVDs, and filmstrips, and for listening to records, cassettes, and CDs, is available for in-library use.

The PERIODICAL Collection includes a selection of journals and magazines of interest to historians and educators. Back issues of selected titles are available. Current and back issues may be used in the library.

The VERTICAL FILE Collection includes articles, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and other miscellaneous items which may be borrowed for 2 weeks.

The PICTURE FILE Collection includes photographs and illustrations from a variety of provincial archives and museums, as well as a selection of poster-size illustrations and photos suitable for use in schools. Items may be borrowed for 2 weeks.

The RARE BOOK Collection includes out-of-print and rare books of historical significance. Supervised use of rare items is permitted in the library.

The NOT RECOMMENDED Collection includes items written for children which have been identified as containing stereotypes, factual errors, misrepresentations, or errors of omission. These items are not recommended for casual use without an understanding of the criticisms which have been raised about their content. These items may be borrowed for one month.
