Greening the Library

GDI Library - Regina staff are conscious of the fact that we live on a finite planet with finite resources, and that as North Americans we collectively consume more than our fair share of the Earth’s resources. We encourage our patrons to take some simple, painless actions with us to help reduce our waste and tread more lightly on the planet.

PRINTING

The library does not charge for printing, but that doesn’t mean it’s “free” – the library’s budget must absorb the monetary costs of printing, and the planet has to absorb the environmental costs.

Please ask yourself the following questions BEFORE YOU PRINT!

  • Do I really need this item in print format? Would I pay to print it if I were being charged for printing? If the answer to either of these questions is no, please do not print.
  • Can I double-side my printing? Can I print multiple pages per sheet (e.g. when printing Power Point slides)? Library staff can assist you if you’re not sure how to set the printer to do this.
  • Have I done a “Print Preview” before printing from the Internet to make sure I’m not printing unnecessary pages?

LAMINATING

($0.50 per metre for GDI/DTI/SUNTEP students only. Other patrons are asked to use laminating facilities provided by their faculties or by office supplies stores.)

When materials have been laminated, they cannot be recycled and will eventually end up in a landfill. Please think carefully about whether you intend to use something long enough to warrant laminating it. Items which will be used only once or for a short period of time before being discarded should NOT be laminated.

EATING AND DRINKING

Please do not eat in the library. The crumbs and food wrappers attract mice.

Please help us reduce our waste by not purchasing beverages in disposable containers. As an incentive for patrons to make the extra effort to bring their own drinking containers, we permit beverages in the library when they are in reusable containers. Patrons who bring in disposable coffee cups or other beverage containers intended for one-time use will NOT be permitted to drink from them in the library.

RECYCLING

Please throw recyclable paper in the recycling bins stationed through the library, not in the garbage cans. If you must drink from a disposable can or bottle outside of the library, please make sure the empties find their way to a recycling bin rather than the garbage can. Check with library staff about where to recycle batteries or other items you’re unsure about.

SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!

Library staff welcome suggestions for further steps we could take to minimize our impact on the planet. Let us know if you’ve got a good idea!
